BACKGROUND
In China, there are 20.57 million hearing impaired or mute people who are unable to communicate easily with others. The barrier is that sign language is not a language that most people learn, unless they really have to. So, how to help the public understand and learn to sign with ease?
SOLUTION
Hundreds of millions mobile phone users in China use Emojis to communicate as part of their daily lives. So we designed a set of Emoji icons based on sign, which was free to download. When a user clicks on each Signemoji, he or she would get an explanation of its meaning at the same time. Therefore using sign in daily life as a new language.
RESULT
Within just 3 months Signemoji icons were sent over 10,000,000 times. Over 45 media outlets reported the Signemoji story. And a new language has now been made available to everyone.
